The Nokia N9 is a much awaited phone but unfortunately not everyone can get their hands on this phone. With the MeeGo, the product of years of developmental efforts to come up with an ideal mobile software, being canceled we can say this phone is just part of mobile history. The Nokia N9 might not be available to the majority of us but it is nice a nice mobile phone to review as it is an evolution of the Nokia N8 in terms of its hardware and it is a good gauge of what we can expect from the brand in the future.
Hardware
Looking at it, we can say it is one of the most beautiful phones ever made. The design is irresistible as it is able to blend elegance because of its minimalist concept and its distinct Nokia touch. The handset is very slim at 12.1 mm tapering on the ends.
The N9′s body is a unibody made from machined poycarbonate monolith. The phone has a matte finish with a good feel like that of an anodized aluminum body but a more sturdy kind. You can get this in black, magenta, or cyan. The chrome touch on the back might be prone to scratches though. The Nokia N9 is also equipped with an 8 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens paired with a dual-LED flash. The phone can take awesome pictures with accurate exposure and balance of colors.
Software
Sad to say that the MeeGo has been sentenced to end but the 1.2 Harmattan software is a good representation a modern, effective, clean linux-based mobile OS. Aside from the copy-paste feature and multi-tasking capability, the N9 also offers a potent list of online services.
Right from your pocket, you will notice the phone displaying the time faintly plus any notification it might need to buzz you about. You can just tap the screen and slide that finger on the notification and you will get the detailed info about it.
You also have access to online services like Google, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Skype among others. You need to set these up when you first power up the N9 after creating a Nokia account. The rest of the features like management of contacts, messages, surfing the web, emailing, etc. comes pretty basic and simple which makes life easier for everyine.
Verdict
The Nokia N9 is a sign of hope for the company considering that it lagged far behind Apple and other phone manufacturers in the past years. It is pretty impressive but it is sad to hear that the platform will be discontinued, therefore it is hard to recommend.
